What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium funding is additional funding allocated to schools based on the number of students in years 7-11 that are classed as ‘disadvantaged’.  The funding should be used to raise the attainment of ‘disadvantaged’ students and support them in reaching their potential.

Students are classed as ‘disadvantaged’ if they fit into any of the following categories:

  • Those who are receiving free school meals (FSM) or who have received FSM in the last 6 years (Ever6 FSM);
  • Those students recorded as a service child or in receipt of a child pension from the Ministry of Defence (Ever6 Service Child);
  • Those who are classed as Looked-after Children (LAC) defined in the Children Act 1989 as one who is in the care of, or provided with accommodation by, an English local authority;
  • Children who have ceased to be looked after by a local authority in England and Wales because of adoption, a special guardianship order, a child arrangements order (previously known as a residence order).

We would encourage any potentially eligible parents/guardians/carers to apply for free school meals as the money does not just pay for school meals, but also for additional subsidies such as uniform, trips, school materials, revision books etc. Students who receive this support are not explicitly identified to other students. For example, using our fingerprint payment system, students eligible for FSM have the amount automatically loaded each day and use the system in the same way as all other students.

How Can Schools use Pupil Premium Funding?

The purpose of the funding is for schools to appropriately support those students identified as Pupil Premium and enable them to both raise their attainment and reach their potential.  Schools are free to spend the funding as they see fit and there is no requirement for it to be spent on individual students simply because they are classed as Pupil Premium.
