Curriculum Intent
|
At Shenley Brook End School, our curriculum is designed to develop exceptional young people who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, character and qualifications needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. Through a broad, ambitious and inclusive curriculum, we inspire students to achieve academic excellence, think critically, develop curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning.
We believe that education extends beyond the classroom. Alongside high-quality teaching and learning, students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular, enrichment and leadership opportunities that broaden their experiences, develop confidence and resilience, and enable them to contribute positively to their communities. Our comprehensive careers education programme raises aspirations, develops employability skills and supports students in making informed decisions about their future pathways.
As well as academic excellence and to develop the whole child, our students work towards the 5D Baccalaureate throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. The 5D Baccalaureate complements academic study through a focus on personal development, project-based learning, enrichment and wider life experiences. It promotes the attitudes to learning that underpin success at Shenley Brook End School through our core values of Be Kind, Work Hard and Be Respectful. Through this programme, students develop leadership, character, wellbeing, citizenship and the wider life skills needed to flourish in education, employment and adult life.
In partnership with families, our local community and the 5 Dimensions Trust, whose mission is to "grow a vibrant community of exceptional people", we are committed to ensuring every student flourishes academically, personally and socially, leaving Shenley Brook End School as a confident, compassionate and successful young adult. 5D Curriculum Guiding PrinciplesThese guiding principles align with the 5 Dimensions Trust's vision and values and ensure that our curriculum promotes both academic excellence and holistic development.
A. Challenge, Ambition and Opportunity All students access a personalised, ambitious curriculum driven by high expectations. Through appropriate challenge and support, we develop fluency, resilience and the confidence needed for all students to succeed.
B. Representation Our curriculum reflects the rich diversity of our students, promoting inclusion, equality and global citizenship. We draw inspiration from our local context, ensuring Milton Keynes serves as a dynamic classroom that connects learning to lived experiences and broadens students' understanding of the world around them.
C. Relationships and Behaviour for Learning Strong, respectful relationships and positive behaviour are foundational to the success of our curriculum. Our nurturing and supportive environment enables students to engage fully with their learning, take intellectual risks and achieve their potential. Through mutual respect and a culture of responsibility, students are empowered to flourish academically, socially and emotionally.
D. Coherence Carefully sequenced from the National Curriculum and examination specifications, our curriculum builds deep subject knowledge over time towards ambitious and clearly defined end points. Assessment is used purposefully to develop fluency, depth of understanding and readiness for future success.
E. Deepening Understanding We secure core knowledge and revisit it regularly in a range of contexts to embed fluency and long-term retention. This approach develops critical thinking and ensures learning is sustained over time.
F. Integration of Knowledge and Skills Effective curriculum design ensures knowledge and skills are intentionally sequenced and embedded. This promotes creativity, problem-solving, independent thought and the ability to transfer learning across different contexts.
G. Alignment and Adaptability While aligned across the schools within the Trust to promote consistency and excellence, our curriculum remains adaptable to meet the diverse needs of our students. Personalised approaches and cross-curricular opportunities enrich the learning experience and support student success.
H. Evidence-Led Pedagogy at the Heart of Curriculum Delivery Our curriculum is delivered through evidence-informed approaches including active learning, metacognition, retrieval practice and oracy. These strategies increase engagement, deepen understanding and develop reflective, independent learners.
I. Character Our curriculum nurtures intellectual curiosity alongside emotional intelligence. Through personal development, British Values, careers education, enrichment opportunities and the 5D Baccalaureate, students develop the character, confidence and moral understanding needed to thrive in modern society.
J. Continuous Review and Evaluation We continually evaluate and refine our curriculum using evidence-informed approaches to ensure it remains ambitious, relevant and impactful while reflecting the values and aspirations of our school community.
This curriculum ensures that every student experiences a rich and rewarding education, both within and beyond the classroom, as we work together to grow a vibrant community of exceptional people.
