Design Technology


 As a team of staff we seek to encourage our students to be inspired to acquire creativity; to understand and apply design knowledge and skills of a technological nature with in a safe, supportive and stimulating environment.

 We seek to develop students to recognise effective design solutions and their construction. 

 To be adaptive to technological change and apply e knowledge, content and technology to the production of need meeting resources.

 To understand how to develop sustainable solutions to meet their own and others’ physical needs. 

 To have a sound knowledge of creative manufacturing principles and be able to apply them through deep learning, understanding their impact upon the economy of production and the environment.

The Team/Facilities

Design technology comprises three well equipped resistant material workshops that enable students to design and work with wood, metal and plastics, alongside a well-equipped graphics room fitted with a suite of computers.  We also have two well-equipped food classrooms for the teaching of food preparation and nutrition. There is a technician area where material resources are prepared. CAD/CAM facilities include an A2 laser cutter, 3-D printer, vinyl cutter and Creo and 2-D design software.

Key Stage 3

Students in year seven study design technology for two lessons per fortnight, and year rate study design technology for two lesson periods per week. Group sizes are usually around 20 students. Groups are created by combining forms. Currently three groups are taught for times during the week in year rate. Groups are tiered.

Key Stage 4

In year 9, 10 and 11, design technology GCSE is offered to students as an option subject. GCSE food preparation and nutrition is also offered as an option subject. 

AQA GCSE food preparation and nutrition 

Students in year 9 to 11 follow the AQA food preparation and nutrition specification. There are 2NEA tasks [Non examined assessment]; NEA one is the food investigation task which is worth 15% of the GCSE grade, NEA2 is the food skills task which is 35% of the GCSE grade. In addition, there is also a written exam which is worth 50% of the GCSE grade. All the tasks are completed in school during year 11. Years nine and 10 lessons are designed to prepare the students for these tasks equipping them with the necessary practical skills and understanding of ingredients and nutrition. All GCSE students following this course have been issued with a log in to the digital resource:  and are encouraged to access this at home to support their learning. AQA GCSE Design Technology

In addition to the main resistant materials of wood, metal and plastic, students study knowledge and skills relating to graphics and communication. They are given an awareness of textiles and electronics and commercial methods of production.

The qualification has a coursework content of 50% and an examination worth 50% of the final grade. Students will submit evidence of practical and design work in a digital portfolio. This work is commenced at the end of Year 10 when a theme is made available by the exam board. A range of text books are available. Sixth Form
