Computing & ICT

We aim to introduce both the practical and thinking skills required to solve problems, as well as to cover background theory so pupils understand the underlying principles. Pupils following the more vocational routes have a wide range of skills that can be applied to business situations. All routes provide pupils with the necessary qualifications to study the subject at higher levels.

The Team/Facilities

The department has 8 dedicated computer rooms which are used for teaching the wide range of courses on offer at the school. In addition to this the Maths, English, Humanities, Science, Music, Business Studies and Design Technology curriculum areas have their own computer rooms or sets of laptop computers. There are also sets of iPads and iPods available for booking by all subjects across the school.

There are 7 full time specialist Computer Science and ICT teachers in the department. The Head teacher also teaches the A level Computing course.

We also offer a range of extracurricular clubs; including multimedia, programming and support sessions for students in all years.

Key Stage 3

All pupils study Computer Studies as a subject, with 1 lesson per week in Year 7 and 1.5 lessons per week in Year 8. Units covered over the two years aim to provide each student with a solid foundation to be able to study their choice of the three option courses in Years 9, 10 and 11. Students will experience units covering eSafety plus basic word processing, spreadsheets, graphics and computer programming using image and text based languages.

Key Stage 4

There are three different qualifications available at KS4; AQA GCSE Computer Science, AQA GCSE ICT and a BTEC vocational qualification available as a single or double option.

Both GCSE courses consist of a mix of external assessment and controlled assessment coursework which is completed in lessons.

The BTEC qualification is made of 3 coursework units which are internally assessed and an online examination. The double option will cover the single option units with a further 3 internally assessed coursework units and an additional online external exam.

Sixth Form

The department offers three qualifications at KS5.

ICT A level follows the AQA Syllabus. This course is assessed by two exams at AS. Students take sample project work into one exam and a section of questions is based on this work. At A2 60% of the marks are assessed by one examination and 40% by coursework.

Computing A level follows the WJEC syllabus. The course includes an internal assessment task that counts for 35% of the marks at both AS and A2, with 65% assessed by one examination at each level.

The BTEC ICT Level 3 vocational course follows the Edexcel specification and is modular in nature. The qualification gained depends on the number of units completed. The single award requires six units, three each year. The double award requires 12 units, six each year. Students are required to complete coursework units to given deadlines. The units offered aim to give students experience of a wide range of computer applications, whilst providing ICT skills which are essential in the workplace or during further study.
