We study ICT and Computing because these are skills for life! Computational thinking enables a problem to be broken down and tackled in a structured way, a skill that can be applied to all subjects and life problems. Information communication technology tools are a key part of school, work and daily life.  Effective, efficient use of such tools can enhance our involvement with the outside world.  Become prepared for problems not yet identified by learning what ICT can do for you. 

Ethos

SBE ICT and Computing team aim to introduce both the practical and thinking skills required to solve problems, as well as to provide a sound understanding of theory, enabling students to produce effective solutions to realistic problems. Students following the more vocational routes will gain a wide range of skills that can be applied to business situations. All routes provide pupils with the necessary qualifications to study the subject at higher levels.

The Team/Facilities

The department has 8 dedicated computer rooms which are used for teaching the wide range of courses on offer at the school. In addition to this the Maths, English, Humanities, Science, Music, Business Studies and Design Technology curriculum areas have their own computer rooms or sets of laptop computers. There are also sets of iPads and iPods available for booking by all subjects across the school.

There are 4 full time specialist Computer Science and ICT teachers in the department with two part time  members of staff teaching the full range of courses available. The CEO of The Trust also teaches on the A level computer science course.

We offer a range of extracurricular clubs; including programming and support sessions for students in all years.


Key Stage 3

All pupils study Computer Studies as a subject, with 1.5 lesson per week in Year 7 and Year 8. Units covered over the two years aim to provide each student with a solid foundation to be able to study their choice of the three option courses in Years 9, 10 and 11. Students will experience units covering e-safety plus basic word processing, spreadsheets, graphics and computer programming using a text based language. Key Stage 4

Options available at KS4:

  • AQA GCSE Computer Science
  • OCR Creative iMedia.
  • OCR Information Technologies

GCSE Computer Science is assessed with 2 written examinations to be sat at the end of your 11. You will learn some of the theory around computing and how to program using Python. During the course you will complete an extended programming project set by the exam board to enable you to put newly acquired practical skills to use.

The OCR Creative iMedia is assessed by one examination to be taken in year 10 and 3 internally assessed coursework units. Skills to be developed are  Pre-Production Skills (externally assessed via  examination), Creating Digital Graphics, Storytelling with Comic Strip and Creating Webpages.

OCR Information Technologies – a course of 2 units equally weighted. Unit R012 is a written, externally assessed examination on understanding the tools, techniques and processes for technological solutions used in a digital world. R013 is an internally assessed unit using practical skills in spreadsheets, databases and website development. This is set by OCR and will be marked internally and assessed by OCR

Sixth Form

The department offers two qualifications at KS5:

  • A Level Computer Science
  • BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Information Technology – 2016 specification

A Level Computing Science (AS and A level) follows the OCR syllabus. This A level qualification course includes an internal assessment task that counts for 20% of the marks, with 80% assessed by two examinations at each level. The AS level is assessed via 2 external examinations only. The course is focussed on computational thinking which is assessed in both the Computer Systems exam and the Algorithms and Programming exam.

The BTEC ICT Level 3 vocational course follows the Edexcel specification and is modular in nature. The qualification gained depends on the number of units completed. The extended certificate requires four units to be completed over the two years. Students will complete two units each year. In each year there will be an internally assessed unit and an externally set unit. Students are required to complete coursework units to given deadlines. The units offered aim to give students experience of a wide range of computer applications, whilst providing ICT skills which are essential in the workplace or during further study. Completion of the first year of this course will enable students to claim an AS equivalent should the decision be made not to continue onto the second year.
